Alex Bush was my best friend, and he inspired me every day. My wingman, he was always at my side, helping me run my day-to-day music operations, and I had no bigger supporter or cheerleader than Alex. Losing him has been my greatest sorrow.
Alex was selfless and he was generous, constantly putting others before himself. It was his compassion for others that drove him to his passion to become a lawyer, and the one gift he gave himself was the commitment to attend the Charleston School of Law (CSOL). He was a second-year law student and was on his way to becoming the attorney he had long aspired to be. Alex was proud to be a member of the CSOL community, and his loss is far reaching, felt by not only the faculty and his fellow students, but the law community in which he had worked for two years.
Dean and Professor of Law Andy Abrams said, “Because the Charleston School of Law is such a tight-knit community, this was a shocking and devastating loss for all of us. Alex was an outstanding law student and even more outstanding person. In his all-too-brief life, he touched so many lives; he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Alex and Katie during this incredibly sad and difficult time.”
To honor the beautiful, giving soul that Alex was, we have created the Alex Bush Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Charleston School of Law, with the hope that it will give other students financial support in their pursuit of the career in law that Alex was also working towards. Alex was a truly selfless individual who was always eager to help his friends and family, no matter what time limitations he faced…he always found a way to be there.
CSOL Associate Dean John Benfield said, “The creation of a scholarship in memory of Alex Bush is a wonderful way to honor an outstanding young man. Many law students face financial challenges and a scholarship helps to ease that burden. Alex was a humble person, but one who cared deeply for others. His love of life was evident, he was always smiling and willing to pitch in and help. A scholarship fund will assist future generations of lawyers and keep Alex’s memory alive.”
Assistant Professor of Law William Janssen said, “In my memories of him, Alex is always smiling. His smile was the smile of someone who was happy at his core, content with life and living. He was happy in class, happy in the hallways, happy on the way to his meetings, happy on his way to the Tea Company. Alex came to law school to learn how to be a practicing attorney who could contribute in some meaningful way to the lives of others. Law seemed to be, from my conversations with Alex, a vehicle for him to do good for those less fortunate and those in trouble. I have no doubt that the profession has lost someone who would have used his degree to make a genuine difference. And he would have made that difference smiling.”
